Shamas-ur-Rehman Toor (Shams) was born and brought up in Pakistan. He went to the University of Engineering and Technology (Lahore) to earn his Bachelors in Civil Engineering. After working in the industry for sometime, he went on to pursue his masters (M. Eng., Construction Engineering and Infrastructure Management) at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Bangkok, Thailand. Quest for further education took him to the National University of Singapore (NUS) where he earned his PhD in Project Management. He worked in NUS as a reseach fellow before he joined the University of New South Wales (UNSW) as a lecturer in the Faculty of the Built Environment (FBE) in 2009.
During his academic career, he has obtained several scholarships (UET Merit Scholarship, HM King of Thailand Scholarship and NUS Research Scholarship) and won various awards (Top Student Award, AIT Most Appreciated Student Award, NUS President Fellowship Award). He has also held several elected offices in the student unions he has served. He is also a member of the Youth Parliament of Pakistan.
