Richard Johnson studied Architecture at the University of New South Wales, graduating with 1st Class Honours in 1969. He was admitted to the degree of Master of Philosophy following study in town planning and urban design at University College London. In 1976 he was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire for services to Architecture. In 2008 he was awarded the AIA Gold Medal for his exceptional body of work and contribution to the profession.
He is a founding director of Johnson Pilton Walker Architects, an award winning, multi-design disciplinary practice which is currently working on a wide range of projects in Australia, China and New Zealand. Recent projects include National Portrait Gallery, Australian Museum New Zoology Building, Hilton Hotel Sydney Refurbishment, Westpac Place Sydney and Art Gallery of New South Wales New Asian Wing. He has for the past ten years worked with Joern Utzon on the refurbishment of the Sydney Opera House.
His interests and practice spans the disciplines of urban design, architecture, planning, landscape, interior design and exhibition design.
Richard is a founding Director of the Australian Architecture Association, is on the Board of the Australian Technology Park and the Redfern Waterloo Authority is a member of the City of Sydney Design Advisory Panel.
