Joined UNSW in 2001, on contract, as a Lecturer and Research Officer. Prior to an academic career in Australia, worked as a private planning consultant in Canada specialising in public involvement, facilitation and specialised research, with a focus on qualitative data management and analysis. Preceding that, was a community development facilitator in local government also in Canada for several years. This included working with grassroots organisation in an effort to more efficiently and effectively deliver parks, recreation and facilities within communities. The position also involved policy research and plan-making.

Nancy is an active member of both the Planning Institute of Australia (PIA) and the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP). Was the Chair and member of the Provincial Planning Education and Practice Review Committee for the Alberta Association, Canadian Institute of Planners from 1995-1997 which was the provincial, professional planning accreditation body for CIP. Was a national, Senior Editor for the professional planning Plan Canada from 1997-2002. Sat as a member of the quasi-judicial Subdivision and Development Appeal Board for the City of Calgary from 1994-1997.

Urban Sociology, Integrated Planning · Communication, Local Planning, General City Planning, Social and Cultural Planning and Qualitative Methods. Also supervises thesis students.

Research


Research interests include public involvement and innovative research methods with the intent to inform social, public policy; state ideology and urban governance structures including professional organisations, and urban and regional migration patterns and motives within Australia, particularly regarding low-income support recipients. The latter interest was supported in 2002 and 2003 by two large AHURI (Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute) grants. These migration studies focussed on housing and the net-welfare· benefits of living in both urban and rural localities.
