Bruce Edward Watson begun his design career in the area of ‘object’ design, designing and exhibiting intimate objects with relationships to the human body. Bruce then moved from object design to architectural design, from there the focus turned inward to interior. The crucial link between intimate object and interior being scale and a connection that is at the intimate human scale of touch.
Bruce is a lecturer in design at FBE and maintains a practice as a designer working in the fields of interior architecture/design and architecture. The experience gained in the practice of design is a generator for the courses Bruce designs and teaches, bringing industry related focuses and the realities of practice to the design studio and lecture setting of UNSW. Designing and making are paramount as the underpinning research in the formation of these studio activities. Bruce was appointed as a lecturer in 2002 and has taught and designed studio courses at FBE.
Teaching
Bruce’s current primary role at UNSW FBE is as the Interior architecture third year coordinator. Bruce also lectures in and coordinates Design Studio 5 & 6.
'The practice of Interior Architecture' a third year subject is a new lecturing role. This course is designed to underpin design studio practices with industry related skills; Bruce also supervises dissertation students in their final year of the interior architecture degree.
Research
Bruce’s area of research is currently centred on Learning and Teaching within a design studio settings. This research allows a nexus between making and teaching and the possibility for both to influence the other.
