Dr Patrick X.W. Zou is Associate Professor in Construction Management and Director of Research Students in Faculty of the Built Environment (FBE) at The University of New South Wales (UNSW). He is also Chairman of the FBE Research Committee; Adjunct Chair Professor of Risk Management in Hunan University; Visiting Professor in Renmin University of China; Guest Professor in Shenzhen University; Regional Vice President (Reseach and Education) of the UK Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) Australasia.
Dr Zou obtained his PhD in October 1999 and joined the Faculty of The Built Environment as a full-time Lecturer in 2000. He was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2003 and Associate Professor in 2006. Dr Zou was Senior Visiting Academic in Tsinghua University China; Visiting Academic in University of Florida USA, and National University of Singapore.
Dr. Zou is Director of Graduate Research Programs (PhD, MPhil and Masters by Research) in the Faculty of the Built Environment. His previous administrative appointments in FBE included Director of Master of Construction Project Management (MCPM) Program (Jan 2004 -- Dec 2006) and Director of Construction Management Research Group (Jan 2001 -- Dec 2004).
As Director of Graduate Research Programs, Dr. Zou is committed to the creation of and maintaining best possible research and learning environment and culture for the students, which leads to enriching students’ academic and social experience and generating high quality research outcomes in terms of publications and other forms. He finalised and implemented the MPhil program in 2007 and developed Research Seminar Series for reserch students. He is currently investigating the the feasibility of "PhD by Publication" Program.
During his Directorship in Master of Construction Project Management Program (Jan 2004 to Dec 2006), Dr. Zou reviewed and reformed the Program from “Master of Construction Management” to Master of Construction Project Management”. He also created two new programs “Graduate Certificate in Construction Project Management” and “Master of Construction Project Management in Professional Practice”. These reform and development was based on wide and inclusive consultations with different stakeholders including students, staff and professional leaders. This transformation meets the contemporary needs of students, socieaty and the construction industry; and provides unique opportunities for students to learn the contemporary management principles, techniques and practice in construction project management. It has been proven that these initiatives were vital and successful.
In his appointment, between Jan 2001 to Dec 2004, as the Head (Convenor) of Construction Management Research Group, Dr. Zou was responsible of managing the Group which includes more than 10 staff and more than 10 research students, with particular emphasis on organising research seminars, providing support to Group members, and monitoring research students’ progress.
Dr. Zou was a member of the assessment panel of the New South Wales Government Department of Education and Training (DET) which assess applications for Institutional Registration and accreditations.
Dr Zou is the General-Secretary of the Society of Chinese Australian Academics (May 2000 to present).
Dr. Zou was a member of the Australian Expert Panel and Technical Advisor of the Aust-Aid project “China Capacity Building Program” ," TN37 “Promotion of honest administration in the Chinese Construction Industry”. The project was funded by the Australia Government through Aust-Aid and the total funding was about AU$1 million. The goal of the project was to strengthen the capacity of the Ministries of Supervision and Construction of China and development of comprehensive tools and procedure manuals to measure and monitor the performance of the construction projects and to eliminate corruption practice in the Chinese construction industry. The project started in December 2000 and ended in August 2002 and involved extensive interactions with and trainings to the Chinese officials on construction project management and procurement, including construction supervision, construction project database design and implementation and tendering process evaluation. Three reports were produced and submitted to relevant bodies.
Dr. Zou’s approach for teaching could be discribed as “traditional + innovative + research-led” with a rationale of “student-centred + inspirational”. Over the last 9 years, Dr. Zou has taught a number of different courses in postgraduate and undergraduate programs, including
. Dr. Zou has conducted in-depth research into teaching, learning and pedagogies, and published many peer-reviewed papers. He has provided more than 30 guest lectures and seminars to various universities and companies as well as government organisations and professional bodies/institutions.
Dr Zou has received several Awards for his excellence in teaching.
