Starting a five year degree commitment can be a nerve racking experience for some new students. However, minds are put at ease at the Faculty of the Built Environment (FBE) as first year Planning students have the opportunity to talk openly with Alumni and find out about all the amazing career options available to them after Graduation.

“It was nice to be able to come back to the Faculty and talk with the young students and share the interesting and varied employment opportunities you are able to enjoy after graduating from Planning”, said Contessa, Planning Alumnus.

“I remember being a first year student, so I was excited about the opportunity to reassure students, promote the planning profession and share my experiences”, added Ms. Hajinikitis.

Planning students were also able to gain valuable insight into what to expect during the course of their degree.

“The Planning degree offers a good mix of theory and practical experience to enable you to understand all the built environment disciplines and be able to marry them together when approaching your work”, explained Ms. Diana Banjanin, Planning Alumnus.

“It is also great to have a job where you are out on-site and talking with people in the community about real issues, instead of stuck in an office”, added Ms. Banjanin. “You have the opportunity to make a real impact to change communities, and that is a really rewarding experience”.

The FBE regularly invites Alumni to be involved in teaching and learning activities to add value to programs for current students.

“The Faculty maintains a strong sense of community and welcomes the continued involvement from Alumni from all of its programs for various activities and events”, said Professor Peter Murphy, Dean FBE.

The UNSW Planning program is designed to give students all the skills to be able to analyse the built environment and imagine new ways of improving it. The highly sought-after FBE Planning graduates go onto plan cities, influence government policies or even shape development strategies.
