What is your role at Geyer Future Environments?
Currently I am a designer in the Workplace Strategy Group within the practice. We specialise in aligning an organisation’s environment to their business objectives, brand, work styles and culture. Essentially, we create interiors that are an effective tool for a business to support specific behaviours, work practices and so on.
What are some of your projects?
Some of my current projects range from a property/ accommodation strategy for a global biomedical engineering firm to a master plan for the University of Adelaide Library. I also create architectural briefs for new buildings, review architectural / developer submissions and write accommodation briefs for interiors.
Do you have a favourite project?
The best projects are ones that are people focused. One of my favourites was a fit-out for a legal firm. We undertook a comprehensive investigation of who the company wanted to be, how they wanted to work, and what was important to them, from the CEO through to personal assistants and the mail room staff. The result is a work environment that allows people to collaborate and work together. In the new offices many of the staff met people for the first time who had been working only 30 metres away from each other for years!
What are you passionate about as a designer?
The Interior Architecture degree taught me to expect more from what we do. Making our environments count in the lives of those who work and play in them and formulating a design with rigor and thought. This has become an important part of my professional life. It is for this reason that I have moved into a more strategic design role.
What qualities do you think make a great interior architect?
Humility. To not assume that we know everything and to ensure that the investigation and process we go through is open and as inclusive as possible. Design is not about the designer, it’s about the client, and the people who will be using and inhabiting the spaces we create.
