Bachelor of Architectural Studies

Architecture is one of the most visible and widespread of all art forms as well as a disciplined and creative profession. As an Architect, you may design buildings and their surroundings, often to great detail, taking into account the demands of materials, technologies, budget, brief and regulations.

Career paths

Architects may work alone or as part of a team. However, the architect is the one professional responsible for considering the building (and the building process) in its entirety. Graduates of the 3+2 Architecture Program may work in private consulting, large commercial practices or government and development agencies. FBE graduates from the Architecture Program enter the workplace with theoretical and technical abilities that are highly regarded and sought after.

Add Career Flexibility

The aim of the undergraduate and graduate combination is to provide an accreditation that is mobile, so that the educational packages will allow students to move more easily from one program to another in different countries around the world. The change is linked to principles of the Bologna Agreement - an agreement across universities in the European Union (EU) that was set up to allow European students more flexibility and mobility in their tertiary education.

After graduating from the Bachelor of Architectural Studies, students will have several options:

OPTION 1 : Continue to Master of Architecture (MArch)

The 2 year Masters degree is the professionally accredited degree, making holders eligible to register as Architects after the prescribed work experience and successful completion of the professional examination. Students can choose to complete their MArch at FBE or elsewhere, including internationally.

OPTION 2 : Conclude study and enter the workforce

Students can move into a career at this point. Career possibilities include positions in architecture and design practices, in construction coordination, and in set design and art installation. Students holding the first degree are not eligible to register as Architects.

OPTION 3 : Pursue other postgraduate qualifications

Students may also choose to study a different field at postgraduate level, combining their design skills with a Master in Planning, Construction Project Management, Property Development or Sustainable Development. (Subject to admission criteria)

In addition to offering students the opportunity to work or travel without restriction before commencing the MAarch, the 2 degree structure also improves the elective choices available to architecture students. A suite of electives offered in related fields in the FBE will enable MArch students to gain effective knowledge in areas such as planning, construction management and sustainable design. This is a particular strength of architecture at UNSW, and just one of the reasons why we continue to be regarded as amongst the most prestigious architecture programs in Australia.
