As an Architect, you may design buildings and their surroundings,
often to great detail, taking into account practical demands
as well as concerns grounded in many aspects of contemporary life.
Architects are responsible not only for the realisation of a purely functional
shell, but also the conception of an environment of space and light, a
cultural signifier and importantly, a work of art.
The Degree
The Architecture program in the Faculty of the Built Environment (FBE)
is a world class program, designed to deliver an architectural education
appropriate to contemporary multidisciplinary professional practice.
Taught in a studio based setting by leading academics and practitioners,
it prepares graduates to think analytically and critically, with initiative
and creativity.
Students approach architecture and its practice in its social, ethical and
cultural contexts. The program is designed to develop students' knowledge
and skills in Design, Communication and Technology, whilst giving them a
strong grounding in the History and Theory of Architecture. Students also
develop an understanding of the technological developments within the field
and appreciate how these can assist in improving the process and quality of
inhabited environments.
Students present their work in the form of drawings and models with open
critique and discussion. Each student is also required to write essays and
reports as well as produce computer-based modelling. Graduates have highly
developed problem-solving skills and the ability to shape many contending
forces into architectural form.
Who should study Architectural Studies at the FBE?
- Those who have an interest in buildings and the spaces around them.
- Those who wish to work in a career that combines precision with creativity.
- Those who enjoy the challenge of arguing ideas and solving complex problems,
and are interested in using physical and computer generated drawings and
models to do so.
Program Description
The Bachelor of Architectural Studies degree provides academic education in the practice
and theory of architecture. It requires full time attendance for three years. Graduates
will be eligible to apply for entry into the Master of Architecture program at UNSW.
Progression through the program is by stages, each comprising two semester-long design
studios and their corresponding supporting courses. Admission to each stage is subject
to the successful completion of the design courses of the preceding stages, except where
approval has been given by the Program Head
Program Objectives and Learning Outcomes
