Entry requirements
Applicants are selected on the basis of their academic qualifications and relevant
industry experience.
The minimum requirement for Postgraduate Research Degree (PhD, Master by Research or MPhil) is an appropriate undergraduate degree,
usually at honours level, in a field represented within UNSW Built Environment, or another appropriate
discipline. In exceptional cases students may be admitted on the basis of professional
experience.
Applicants who do not meet these requirements may be permitted to gain admission via a
qualifying program.
Some students may be available for advanced standing recognising documented prior learning.
Application process
Applications to Postgraduate degrees are made directly to UNSW.
The
UNSW Apply Online form
makes the process quick, easy and secure.
Alternatively, students may wish to complete the
Application For Admission Form and lodge it to the UNSW Graduate Research School.
Students wishing to undertake Postgraduate Research Degree (PhD, Master by Research or MPhil) should contact the Director of Research Students to discuss their research interests
and/or potential topics(s). The Director may consult with appropriate staff regarding your
interests to confirm the availability of supervision in the Faculty. The Director may also
direct you to a staff member who may be able to further discuss your research interests.
In some instances, particular academic members have proposals waiting to be fully developed,
some with access to funding.
Prospective students are required to submit a written research proposal with their application. This
should be in the order of 1000-2000 words (PhD 3000words). In general, your proposal should demonstrate:
- Clear aims and objectives
- A preliminary literature review showing an understanding of the key literature in the area
- A statement of the research problem and its significance
- An outline of the research method to be used for analysing the problem
- A good command of the English language
- Capability of independent and critical thinking.

Once your application is received by the
Graduate
Research School, it is checked,
and sent directly to the Faculty. If your application has been accepted and a supervisor
is assigned, an offer will be sent to you by post and email.
Application deadlines
Applicants for Postgraduate degrees by research must lodge their application:
- No later than one month prior to the commencement
of the semester in which they wish to enrol if they are Australian citizens.
Late applications will be considered only if places are available.
- No later than four months prior to the commencement
of the semester in which they wish to enrol if they are international students, to
allow sufficient time for student visas to be processed. More information is

Fees
It is expected that all new local postgraduate research students enrolling in a
Doctorate or Masters by research at UNSW in 2007 will be granted an entitlement
to exemption from tuition fees under the Commonwealth Government's Research
Training Scheme (RTS). 'Local' refers to Australian citizens and permanent residents,
and NZ citizens.

Student Activity Fees
When you enrol each year the University asks that you make a financial contribution
to help provide services, amenities and representation for all students on campus. These
include sporting facilities, subsidised food outlets, campus media, entertainment, student
resources and leisure programs.
Living Expenses
There are a number of factors which will influence your cost of living, for example, rent will
vary considerable depending on the type of property and its location. Other essential costs are
food, transport, entertainment, clothing and any incidental expenses related to your programs
such as field trips.
As a general guide, students should have at least $2000 to cover the initial establishment expenses
such as rental bond and basic furniture, and allow for average weekly expenses of about $350.
