As a landscape architect you may be responsible for projects that range in scale from the detailed design of a small residential garden, through to the creation of large-scale urban plazas, parklands, town centres or regional ecosystems.
The Degree
The Bachelor of Landscape Architecture (BLArch) Program at UNSW Built Environment was the first of its kind in Australia. The program is distinguished by an approach to learning and teaching that presents landscape architecture as both a powerful way of thinking and a vocation. Graduates of the program are creative problem solvers, able to draw on a depth and range of skills and equipped with the theoretical and practical knowledge that allows them to respond to design briefs of any scale.
Within the BLArch Program, students learn the theory and practice of landscape architecture through the exploration of design principles, graphic techniques, ecological processes and studies of human modification of the environment. The emphasis of the program is on creative design inspired by Australian conditions, an approach that prepares graduates to work anywhere in the world.
During four years of full time study, students combine theory, technique and practice within a sequence of eight Design Studios. Design projects are related to the subject matter of concurrent courses and culminate in an independent design study of regional and national significance.
An important component of the BLArch Program, and one which also sets it apart from degrees offered by other universities, is mandatory work experience of at least 4 months duration. This exposes each student to the demands and expectations of working as a professional landscape architect, and equips them with practical as well as theoretical knowledge.
Professional Recognition
The program is accredited by the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects, and graduates holding the bachelor of Landscape Architecture degree may qualify for the internationally recognised corporate membership of the Institute.
