Australian Projects

The purpose of the local project studio is to enable students to apply previously gained theory to a project that is as real as possible.

Randwick Studio - Session 1, 2007

The potential of this area, around the university, with its major institutions, a lively restaurant district, a diverse shopping centre, access to the beach, open space and dense housing, to become a much more interesting and vital place than it is, is not difficult to see.

The study site comprises four main areas in Randwick, which are the Randwick town centre, the University of New South Wales, Royal Randwick Racecourse and the Prince of Wales Hospital. The studio projects focus on developing Randwick into a vibrant community based on a clear urban design strategy to link these special uses in an area which potentially has global significance.

Castle Hill Studio - Session 2, 2007

Castle Hill is identified as a major centre for the North-West Growth Sector under the Sydney Metropolitan Strategy 2005. In addition, the construction of the North-West Rail Link indicates a number of train stations to be located in the Castle Hill area providing direct rail access to the city. Three sites, based on the siting of the new railway stations on the North-West Rail Link, were explored:
  • Castle Hill Town Centre;
  • Hills Centre/Showground Oval; and
  • Norwest Business Park.

The studio highlighted land use planning around transit oriented development as a catalyst for repositioning poor urban environments towards sustainable mixed-use communities.
