What I did before MPD program:
After graduating with a degree in Construction Management, I worked as a Site Engineer on the construction of a luxury hotel in Auckland, New Zealand. I then moved into a project management role, with a view to becoming more involved in the strategic aspects of construction rather than the “nuts and bolts”.
Why I chose to study the MPD program:
Having enjoyed the tangible nature of the construction industry, a career in property and development stood out as an opportunity to build on my existing experience, while becoming more involved in defining what a project actually is. I liked the idea that during the property and development process decisions are made that not only serve the interests of the company, but have the potential to influence the fabric of our cities.
The MPD degree appealed to me because of the broad range of courses the program offered. Course material covered both the traditional facets of development, ownership and property management, as well more recent considerations such as environmentally sustainable development, and trends in the way people live and work.
What I am doing now:
I’m now working as an Assistant Development Manager for a large integrated property company. As part of the new business team, my role embraces a wide range of skills, from developing an initial project strategy, managing the concept design process, and analysing the financial viability of the project. I enjoy the variety the role offers and particularly the challenge of helping identify the potential of an area or site for development.
