Starting my professional career as an architect, I was attracted to the complexities of the development industry – the law, finance investment, management and public policy surrounding communities and public spaces. The Masters program at UNSW gave me the guidance, atmosphere and platform to nurture my ideas and launch my career in a new direction. You learn not only from the professors, but also your peers through assignments, study tours, and the Friday night pub-crawls. Securing a three month work experience placement at large development company, I was attached to the ‘New Business’ team, responsible for the development of new business with a focus on large projects typically valued at more than AUD $150 million. During this time I provided support for prospective projects and was offered casual employment when his placement ended. It was a challenge trying to juggle the contrasting complexities of full-time work and study. However, the work experience crystallised a number of theories from the classroom, this coupled with a host of guest lecturers from the industry made it a memorable year and a half. The academic world should be sensitive to the way the real property industry is changing, and this is reflected in the new Master of Property and Development program. It combines the flexibility of the earlier MRE program with industry expectations, reflecting the changing structure of the property industry.

Prior to undertaking the Master of Real Estate I worked as a capital markets specialist lawyer in Europe and Asia for Wall Street Investment Banks including exposure to securitisation and structured financings with respect to property in those regions. I completed my law degree and am a licensed Attorney of the State of New York I am currently employed as an Associate Director at a leading professional services firm in Sydney. The postgraduate study allowed me to pursue my interest in both the development and investment aspects of property whilst allowing me to choose specialist electives to supplement courses in which I already had some knowledge and experience. The overall quality of the program including instruction and resources was above average and a focus on Australasia was a particular highlight. Field trips and real life development analysis also created a good balance between theory and practice. The MRE program allowed me to move laterally at a professional level and provided the foundation for me to pursue a specialist career in property which I had wanted to do for quite some time. The new direction of the Master of Property and Development program will enable an even deeper grounding and choice in property development, financial aspects and valuation whilst enforcing the fundamentals of planning, legal and environmental considerations which will only increase in importance in the current and foreseeable social, regulatory and development climate.
