To mark the Year of the Built Environment in 2004, the Faculty of the Built Environment (FBE), UNSW staged one of its largest and most impressive graduand exhibitions in the Sydney Town Hall.

200 mile city:Sydney - Canberra Corridor

The 2004 Graduating Project critically examined the Sydney-Canberra Corridor as an urban development alternative to the expansion of Sydney across the remnant greenbelt of the Cumberland Plain or the Fragile landscape of the coast.

The proposal sought to capitalize on the urban advantages of the National Capital while addressing the fundamental constraints of the intervening territory – water resources and water quality within the catchment of Sydney’s water supply; accessibility by road, rail and air; the individuality of existing towns in the Southern Highlands; the bushfire risk of an extended urban periphery; and the loss of prime agricultural land.

In the first seven weeks of the semester, the investigation was undertaken as a group project in the Year 4 Urban Landscape Design Studio. In the second seven weeks, each student embarked upon the Graduating Project in a Master-class studio. The passion and commitment of the 2004 class is evident in these individual studies, advanced as Design Theses, which together, propose a powerful landscape alternative to conventional metropolitan growth across the ridges and high valleys of the highland region.
