1999-2000 Bondi Junction Redevelopment

Aerial View of Proposed Development

Master Plan

Introduction

Strategically located in Sydney's eastern suburbs and well served by various modes of transportation, Bondi Junction is poised to be a successful urban commercial centre. Unfortunately its rate of growth is falling short of expectation mainly due to poor urban amenity and lack of social facilities.

With the pressure of development increasing in Bondi Junction there is and immediate need to improve its overall image, urban character and amenity. The following are the main challenges when executing physical development interventions:

  • Ensure the history and character of the place is preserved.
  • Improve pedestrian movement and experiences.
  • Enhance legibility of built forms.
  • Enhance permeability of the commercial centre.
  • Improve security through varying evening and night time activities.
  • Encourage a variety of housing stock.
  • Encourage diversity in uses.
  • Reconcile the transportation mix, including bus routes and pedestrian networks.
