This studio introduced students to the skills of design practice in relation to large-scale urban environments, in this instance a 15 hectare industrial area on the Parramatta River at Rydalmere. The primary goal was to provide an understanding of urban design methodology.
After conducting a number of visits to the site, the group determined that there were three distinct characters to it. These were along the waterfront, gradually melting into the centre of the site and fusing together.
From this, the group set out a vision and a theme. The vision was to make the Peninsula a community where different character areas complement different lifestyles. These characters allow the Parramatta River to be experienced in different ways and make this peninsula a special place to live.
The groups’ overlying theme was ‘Renew, Retain, Regenerate.’ These could be translated in to three goals with several objectives.
To Renew, the objectives were to:
- Open, manmade foreshore, to enable views, make the
river accessible, and create a visual link between
university
and the site - Create a transportation hub that included a ferry station, a public transportation loop with a connection to the train station
- Create a mixed use character of residential, office and retail on the site
To Retain, the objectives were to:
- Keep existing mangroves on the foreshore
- Maintain parks and provide areas for sports and picnics
- Keep boardwalks to provide access to the river
To Regenerate, the objectives were to:
- Restore forest and bushland along the creek
- Ensure that boardwalks enable pedestrian activity without damaging the flora of the river-flats and floodplains
- Build footbridges so that the river walk is uninterrupted
