3D mixed use development at Crown St.
Perspective of Crown St from Wollongong Mall
The Thirroul-Bulli region is the city's northern gateway. It should be expected that Sydney will inevitably encroach and thousands of commuters will move to the region. Thirroul-Bulli will need to change to accommodate the new influx of people, while maintaining its existing and valued character.
The main goal is to establish a holistic framework for the appropriate densification of the area, that is sensitive to the existing character yet dynamic, with the capacity to anticipate long term local and regional population growth.
City Centre
Introduction
This study focuses on the urban design problems of Wollongong city centre: specifically is ability to function as a regional centre, its aesthetic quality, the spatial placement of its assets and amenities, and the functional role of the central park. The study suggests urban design strategies to remedy these problems to maximise the unique opportunities available to Wollongong City.
Design Strategies
- Define road hierarchy and establish a pattern of local streets and blocks.
- Use gateways to define the town centre edge and encourage appropriate land uses.
- Maximise the attractiveness of major park/green space.
- Use Crown Street to link key landuses and encourage mixed use development in town centre.
- Disperse and distribute bus services to the city and use these routes to increase residential densities.
- Identify key sites susceptible to change and reinforce key landuse areas.
Foreshore Group
Introduction
This project involved identifying key issues along the foreshore area and applying detailed design solutions for the major activity zones: the harbour, stadium and golf course areas and Corrimal Street.
Design Objectives
Reconnect the foreshore area to the city centre of Wollongong and improve connectivity between key activity zones.
Redesign key open spaces to afford a broader range of activities and attract a larger number of patrons.
Re-invigorate activity in the key zones to enable the foreshore area to cater for the future needs of a larger population.
Recreate a sense of place that builds on the abundant wealth of character and scenic beauty of the entire foreshore area.
Design Strategies
A new marina, continued fishing activities, a fish mark and retail and restaurant facilities.
Expand stadium capacity and develop a sporting, hotel, hospitality and entertainment precinct.
Redevelop golf course into mixed use residential precinct.
Improve the distribution of city traffic.
Build a continuous foreshore tourist drive and pedestrian/cycle pathway.
Reactivate Lang Park with improved amenities and an amphitheatre for social gatherings.
