2006-2007 Five Dock
Issues
Five Dock is a small thriving local shopping strip and commercial centre. Its success can be demonstrated by the high resident to business ratio. There are more than 500 businesses located in the precinct.
The area cannot directly compete with larger neighbouring centres such as Burwood
and Ashfield. An essential task for the team was to understand the points of
difference between Five Dock and neighbouring centres and to provide strategies
to enhance and improve its commercial amenity and aesthetic appeal.
Goals & Objectives
The team’s vision was to create a memorable and attractive heart for the precinct. For this to be realised, the following goals and objectives were set:
- Enhancing the commercial opportunities offered
- Providing a liveable town center
- Ensuring that the town centre is pedestrian-friendly
Strategies
The main urban design strategies developed to achieve the team’s goals and objectives were:
- Public domain improvement, including a tree planting strategy on footpaths every 10-15 metres on the southern end and built out planters every 20 metres on the northern side
- Public space improvement
- Development schemes designed to delineate the existing public space (Fred Kelly Place and the Post Office site)
- Parking and traffic management initiatives, including the retention of on-street parking with new restrictions
- Proposed closure of Ramsay Road in order to simplify traffic on the four way intersection with Great North Road
