2006-2007 Redfern Eveleigh - Active Streets
Issues
The following issues were identified:
- The railway line divides Redfern into the Darlington (University) side and the Redfern Street side.
- The existing Redfern Railway Station is not able to cope with the current or proposed number of commuters nor does it provide positive open space for people to arrive.
- There is also a lack of open space around the station.
Vision
The vision for this area is to revitalise Redfern Street into an active retail and pedestrian strip similar to Oxford St. or King St. (Newtown). This would connect to the shops and cafes on Abercrombie Street and provide a strong pedestrian connection between Redfern Railway Station and Sydney University.
Goals & Objectives
A number of goals and objectives were developed for this site including:
- To revitalize and reconnect this important inner city area.
- Improve retail and cultural facilities.
Strategies
The main strategies for this design proposal were:- To continue Redfern Street across the rail corridor.
- Create a new civic plaza which would be built across the existing platforms.
- This new street would continue down a widened Little Eveleigh Street to a new North Eveleigh Square.
- The new street would strengthen the connection between the two sides of Redfern and create an active retail strip to stimulate development.
- Three thin mixed use towers would create a central space for Redfern's Civic Centre.
