Introduction

Buenos Aires is the capital of Argentina and South America's second largest city with a population of 13 million in the greater metropolitan area including 2.8 million in the 200 sq km Distrito Federal. Located close to the junction of the Rio de la Plata with the Atlantic Ocean, its origins were as a port city - from which residents derive their name 'Portenos'. Known as the ' Paris of the South', the central city has a strong European character with a regular street grid, formal axes, tree-lined avenues, impressive civic buildings and strong perimeter block form. Its social makeup reflects extensive European immigration in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries mostly from Spain and Italy, but also from Britain, Ireland, France and Russia. While it is the intellectual and financial centre of Argentina, its fortunes have been troubled by periods of military dictatorship and economic decline.

The MUDD project investigated three urban design options for two adjacent railway yards in the less affluent southern area of the city, home to considerable warehousing activity, heavy, industrial traffic, four hospitals and two football clubs. This required an approach that went beyond the strict boundaries of the railway sites to ensure integration with surrounding fabric, facilities and infrastructure. The project involved a two week studio based at the Facultad de Arquitectura, Diseno y Urbanismo (FADU), Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA), followed by a five week studio at UNSW.

Pompeya Station

Pompeya Station

This proposal removes the poorly patronised Buenos Aires Train Station and uses Pompeya Station as the terminal for the south-western railway line because of its superior connections to public transport routes including a new subway line.

Buenos Aires Station

Buenos Aires Station

This proposal retains Buenos Aires Train Station and re-invents it as a viable destination point. It involves removing and rebuilding the existing Train Station building and the introduction of new commercial, retail and residential land uses.

Constitucion Connection

Constitucion Connection

This proposal extends the existing ra ilway line eastward to terminate at Constitucion Station, a major transport interchange in the south of Buenos Aires. It retains the Buenos Aires Station as a local transit node. The railway line is elevated to enhance accessibility across the site.
