Introduction

This international studio was divided into two parts: A two week workshop on urban design and conservation held at the Soegijapranata Catholic University in Semarang and a more traditional studio endeavour in Sydney.

The three main areas of Kampung Melayu, Senjoyo and Jalan Pemuda in Semarang were visited, their problems understood with the aid of local experts, and solutions, including implementation procedures, suggested. The solutions developed were reviewed by leaders in design in Indonesia, municipal authorities and academics at Soegijapranato Catholic University.

The second phase was conducted at the FBE based on the feedback recieved in Semarang. The objective was to take the designs further and to present the results in a coordinated manner for international exhibition and as a basis for the report to be submitted to the sponsors of the workshop, the Building and Construction Branch of the Commonwealth of Australia's Department of Industry, Science and Resources [DISR].
