1400 Toothbrushes

Rapid concept generation is a fundamental part of the designer’s skill base. The need to produce numerous ideas without being tied down to any one of them is crucial in fully exploring a new problem area.
Second year students were asked to create thirty toothbrush ideas each in four hours. The outcomes varied from categories like male/female/child/animal/sporty/architectural/ fun/serious/medical. Some handles had integrated clocks so the user could tell how long they need to brush their teeth for. Others explored the ergonomic qualities.
A total of 1400 toothbrush concepts showed that the first step is the hardest.
