Project 5: Wendy Tong
Ergonomics of Children's Toilet Design

Rationale:
Children need toilets specifically designed for their needs however the range in Australia seemed quite limited. This report investigates local and overseas manufacturers’ approaches to toilet design for children.

Aims:
Comparative understanding of Australian  and European designs and standards for children’s toilets.

Methodology:

  • Gather manufacturers’ information
  • Gather Australian and European planning and design standards for toilets
Summary of Findings:
  • In Australia there is only one supplier (Caroma) of children’s toilets, which provides a single small sized child's toilet
  • In Europe manufacturers such as Keramag from Germany categorize children’s toilets into 4 sizes to cater for 2-4, 4-8, 8-12 and 12+ years old.
  • Australian children’s toilets tend to be scaled-down versions of adult toilets. In Europe specific design changes are made to accommodate children’s needs.
