Over 80% of surveyed students didn't like using school toilets, and 56% felt they were unsafe. Lighting and ventilation are often inadequate; floors are wet, resulting in slips, trips and falls; there are no toilet seats and no cubicle locks. Loos were also popular for bullying assaults, graffiti artists, property vandalism and cigarette puffing sessions. Younger students cannot reach flush chains or washbasin taps. Kindergartners in transition from the clean and well-supervised toilets in preschool find adjusting to the dreadful conditions of school toilets a major hurdle. These circumstances are unfortunate, because toileting should be an essential and formative experience for every child in every school in Australia. While schools are desperate to act on this under-discussed issue of toilet cleanliness, there is little funding or resources to work with. Third Year UNSW Industrial Design students were asked to come up with practical and cost-effective design solutions that may be implemented at the school level to improve the condition of childrens toilet facilities. Students were allowed to select from one of the following design projects: Water closets; urinals; or washing basins. Dr Mariano Ramirez
