All students in the Bachelor of Planning (BPlan) Degree at the University of New South Wales complete a thesis in their final semester. This represents the culmination of their undergraduate education and something which they have worked towards ever since joining the Program. Students select their own topic to investigate.
They formulate the research proposal during the first half of the year and then undertake the study and write the thesis in the second semester. Theses are original and substantive research reports in the order of 15,000 words. Not only do they contribute to individual student learning, they often incorporate recommendations for professional practice and policy development.
They are catalogued and can be accessed in the Resource Centre of the Faculty of the Built Environment. The findings of these research projects are sometimes presented at conferences and seminars, as well as written up in professional publications. Summaries can be found on the Faculty’s website.
And again this year, thesis abstracts have been compiled for an end-of-year inter-disciplinary Faculty exhibition of all graduand work. The 7 Degrees exhibition and catalogue will ensure that the work of the 2005 graduating class in planning is disseminated to a wide audience.
The range of thesis projects is outstanding – from natural resource issues to development conflicts, planning for different communities and legal dilemmas. Within New South Wales, Australia and beyond – the 2005 graduands have undertaken an exceptionally diverse body of research concerned with the processes, problems and deeper social, environmental and economic concerns underpinning growth and change in urban, rural and regional areas.
The students’ research has the potential to contribute positively
to a range of contemporary planning challenges. I commend their work to
you and congratulate the 2005 Bachelor of Planning Graduands!
