This 2005 collection of UNSW Industrial Design student projects will help to expand our view of industrial design and the many ways in which design can make a contribution to people in all kinds of circumstances. This year the students have used their final projects to develop design solutions that meet practical needs, provide new insights and add to community and individual well-being.
The graduand work presented here is on the leading edge of social and technical change. It is based upon thorough investigation of the need for the product, the technologies to be employed and the commercial, social and individual benefi ts that could be expected. The design process has included exploration of possibilities, rigorous evaluation and resolution of detail. Final outcomes demonstrate the application of knowledge, technical skills and the ability to connect ideas from diverse areas.
It has been exciting to work with these students, to see them make discoveries and extend their capabilities throughout their program of study at UNSW. In getting to this point the students have completed a four year program that integrates design practice with marketing, sciences, engineering, manufacturing, commerce, history and theory. Their studies have given them skills and a framework for making innovative, appropriate and responsible choices.
The students now presenting their work are ready to take up positions where they will make a valuable contribution to industry and society. On behalf of the dedicated team of full time and part time staff, I congratulate them and wish them well in their further endeavours.
