De-industrialisation over the decades has degraded significant archaeological sites in the Pyrmont area, transforming them into either disused spaces or urban landscapes. This project re-establishes the cultural and historical layers of the Wattle Street Stone Depot, one of the remaining quarries between Pyrmont and Ultimo, with a particular focus on the Wattle Street Cliff.
The project creates a museum for local residents, visitors and students with an interest in the archaeological traces of Pyrmont. A performance art theatre is also included as a public attraction: it provides a backdrop for outdoor performances during the day and, at night, it reveals the vibrant imaginary spaces, silhouettes and illusions of the building. The location of the museum also re-establishes the pedestrian route between Darling Harbour and Pyrmont; it is part of an urban link that moves people diagonally on a new footpath, bringing them into meaningful contact with the building. These programs are directed by the notion of layering, which creates a sense of order and movement through archaeological fragmentations and transformations.
