This project reinvents the gallery in the form of a Centre for Architecture next to the Art Gallery of NSW. It features the creative use of outdoor lighting in a gallery space; a blend of artificial and natural landscapes; a water system complementing the Domain’s reservoir; minimal encroachment on public open space; and sustainable energy. The project emphasises the Domain as public realm and envisages it as a future art district.
The sloping site has a car park below, proximity to Hyde Park, and bridgesto Cook and Phillip Park and Woolloomooloo, which justifies a hybrid project of landscape and architecture. The building will present various exhibitions that promote young architects and display student works and final-year projects from Sydney’s universities. A long gallery space converts into a theatre to host architectural and other events.
An architectural library, bookstore, art store, and café and bar are arranged as ‘stitches’ that span the building’s width and relate to main spaces via ramps, stairs and lifts. The architecture proposition meets demands for both a large public building and outdoor public space, while exploring the relationship of inside/outside and nature/artifice.
