THE SEAPLANE TERMINAL AND MUSEUM

The site for the Seaplane Terminal and Museum is Lyne Park, Rose Bay. Rose Bay was the original location of the first international aerodrome in Australia. This project re-establishes the site and mediates its opposing conditions: the land and sea thresholds; constructed and natural elements; current and past history; pedestrians on the foreshore and seaplane passengers.

The design proposes a multifunctional space that includes a seaplane museum, an active seaplane terminal, and a public open space. It uncovers the aviation history of Rose Bay and prompts community nostalgia. The design develops an architectural discourse that explores the idea that memory is embedded in the fabric of the building. By exploring this notion through visual and tactile cues, the project provides a window onto the past and a means of reflection on the site’s present surroundings. This discourse manipulates different scales of memory and layers collective and individual memories, suggesting new links between memory and space
