TANK STREAM LANE

The project focuses on the underground Tank Stream, the north–south orientation, which historically divided Sydney socially and economically. Originally, the Tank Stream was used as a fresh water supply, until it became a waste dumping ground and disappeared under the buildings.

This project reconnects the underground Tank Stream—which will act as a living archaeological museum—to the above-ground Tank Stream Lane Gallery and Museum. The project reinvigorates a decaying link to Sydney’s past, while engaging Sydney’s avant-garde arts scene to address gaps in the city’s history and memory. The program invokes the flâneur experience with ‘learning backdrops’ in the form of art-oriented installations, which follow the path of the Tank Stream from Hyde Park to Circular Quay but blur the north–south divide. They also resist the notion of absolute history and memory by reinterpreting historical fragments of Sydney’s sociopolitical structure. The Tank Stream Lane experience undermines interior/exterior boundaries and object/subject positions. There is no clearly defined centre for the experience, further negating the idea of a singular history, memory or origin. Art and architecture thus deconstruct absolute vision and aid in blurring class structures.
