MArch

Career Options

MArch (Architectural Design)

Graduates can expect to emerge from the Design Major of the Architectural Design program with their creativity enhanced, an expanded design repertoire, and an increased assurance in handling and presenting their design work.

MArch (History/Theory)

Those emerging from the History/Theory Major can expect to have a deeper understanding of contemporary architectural and design issues, discrete frames of reference from which to view the design professions and their work, and an improved ability to discern and articulate matters critical to architectural and design discourse.

MArch (Computing)

Students can expect to emerge from the Program with a comprehensive set of skills and understanding in architectural computing and an increased ability to discriminate the appropriateness of current applications as well as their potential for the future. Many of our graduates re-enter their professions with specialised computing knowledge and skills, others have pursued careers as multimedia designers or as IT managers, while others have pursued academic careers.

Hear from the Graduates

Demis Bhargava - MArch (Architectural Design)

After graduating from a Bachelor of Architecture and working in the profession for three years, I realised that I needed to figure out a clearer path for my methods of designing and building. Hearing of positive experiences from friends and family who had previously studied at UNSW, I decided to undertake the MArch (Design) degree.

Having completed the degree, I must admit to have been pleasantly surprised. I believe that the quality of education to be of an excellent standard, moreover, the opportunities to interact and network with people of diverse nationalities and professional backgrounds allowed me to grow personally and professionally. Working together on studio projects, elective group assignments, and discussing design in an informal atmosphere brings the best out of us architects. The projects themselves were challenging and stimulating, and I was fortunate to have taken electives – theoretical and practical – that I could apply to my designs.

The academic staff were, dare I say, quite cool. Tough but fair, knowledgeable yet friendly, they encouraged me to develop an architectural position that is grounded in theoretical and sustainability principles, while staying true to my instinctive (and sometimes harebrained) approach to design. It’s true that an architect never stops learning, but studying at UNSW has been an important milestone.

Geeta Thomas MArch (Computing)

My first introduction to the use of computers in Architecture was to create accurate 2D drawings. I then became interested in learning how I could use the computer at every stage of the design process, from the conceptual sketch to the final details. For that reason, I was attracted to the Master of Architecture (Architectural Computing) at UNSW. This program offered to bridge the gap between design and computing technologies, thus bringing me closer to realising my interests.

I was introduced to new concepts and research carried out globally in the field of Architectural Computing. I was able to discuss and share my perspectives with students from various parts of the world, thereby increased my awareness and developed good communication skills. Further, the wide choice of electives helped me to enhance my technical skills in current graphics and modelling software. Above all, the most significant contribution of this program and the Faculty of the Built Environment to my personal development was that it has helped me to learn how to realise my goals.
