Passionate and Creative

When 1st year students were asked to profile their own local community, draw a conceptual map of their area and explore and reflect on the relationship that they have with their own local area, Kate Tudehope created this quilt to graphically represent her connection to her family and the community of Seaforth in Sydney. Rebecca Lockart ocumented her community of Culburra Beach in a photo album style memory box.
When 2nd year students were asked to research and present on a topic of contemporary planning interest, Richard Shepherd, Laura Goh, Petra Crawshaw and Yi-Juan Koh created three display panels. These panels showed the application of the Radburn design to public housing estates in Claymore in Sydney: the myths about this community and its design; its social and physical challenges alongside its strengths and assets; and some strategies that may improve the area’s housing and social development. Some other student topics included: Wheelchair Access at Central Station in Sydney; Planning in Dubai; The Cumulative Impact of Restaurants in Newtown; and Kings Cross Social Issues. After researching, preparing for and presenting a 2 hour-long seminar, students had these things to say:
“It doesn’t feel right that I am having so much fun at uni !”
“Last year at this time, I never thought I would be able to do this”
“If you think you can make a model in a week, you’re wrong!”
“After presenting, I was wrecked – I had to go to bed at 8.30!”
“Do you know how hard it is to prepare a 2 hour lecture??”
