Work Experience
You are required to obtain a specific period of practical experience during your enrolment. Your practical experience needs to be completed in part before the commencement of Semester 5 and in total before the beginning of Semester 7.
Please note work experience has a total units of credit value of 24. LAND1381 and LAND1481 are each worth 12 units of credit.
A minimum of 90 working days practical experience is required, of which a minimum of 40 days should be obtained from within the Landscape industry prior to Landscape Engineering Principles (S1 Year 3) and a minimum of 45 days from within a landscape design office prior to Professional Practice (S2 Year 4). This normally takes the form of employment during long student vacations supervised by a landscape architect, landscape contractor or nursery. Each student undertaking work experience must obtain prior approval of the Work Experience Co-ordinator. Each student must obtain from the employer a statement of experience gained, maintain an accurate record in logbook form and submit a written report describing the work undertaken during the various work experience components. The logbook and report are assessable components of the Landscape Engineering Principles and Professional Practice courses.
We recommend that students undertake their practical experience as early in their program as possible with a view to completing the first half in Semester 5 and the second half in Semester 7, as required. If students wish to vary their practical experience they need to get formal approval from the coordinator.
In administering this prerequisite, the following points are noted for your clarification:
- Each two month period is deemed to be a minimum of forty (40) days, and each period of practical experience shall not be less than fifteen (15) consecutive working days.
- All practical experience must be gained since enrolment in the Landscape Architecture degree course (3380).
- Work undertaken in a part-time capacity during the University teaching sessions is unlikely to count towards the practical experience requirement.
- Each period of practical experience attained must be recorded on an "Experience Log" and signed by your supervisor. These forms are available from the Faculty Student Centre.
- Work in the landscape industry should be preferably with a member of the Nursery Industry Association; Landscape Contractors should be a member of the Landscape Contractors Association; and the Design Office should have a corporate member of the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects supervising your work. Practical Experience Logs should be signed by a partner or senior member of the firm.
- A brief report (two A4 typed pages) of each type of work experience must be submitted with the Experience Logs on completion of LAND1381 Landscape Practice 1 and LAND1481 Landscape Practice 2.
- It is stressed that prior approval must be obtained from the Head of the Landscape Architecture program before undertaking any work which you expect to qualify for the Practical Experience requirements.
