Julie Frost with her Mvura design

Julie Frost and her Mvura design has been snapped-up by aid organisation - In
Africa Community Foundation. They saw the potential of Mvura as a household
water purifier to reduce disease in Africa.

What is your role in In Africa Community Foundation?
I work for them in the Rural Infrastructure Department. We will be doing further development of the water purifier that I designed. They are funding the building of prototypes, product testing and the manufacture and distribution of Mvura into the African Region. Completing the purifier is only one part of what I do. In Africa has ongoing projects which provide useful products for the communities. They also design products that are made in the communities and sold to generate income. In addition I play a role in the development of business colleges and other similar projects run by the organisation.

Why did you decide to study Industrial Design at UNSW?
I thought that industrial design suited me perfectly as it encompasses art, engineering and business. I chose UNSW over other universities because it has more emphasis on business and the engineering aspect of design, which is imperative to know if your products are going to work!

What did you like most about the degree?
The great thing about industrial design is that it is a very social degree. Ideas are developed and improved through discussion with classmates and lecturers and as a result, this is one of the few degrees where lecturers really know students well. They develop students’ strengths and assist with their weaknesses. By the end of the degree the student group is very close, having learnt to encourage and help each other.

What advice would you give someone thinking about studying Industrial Design?
Enter it with an open mind. Industrial design jobs are very competitive, but with an industrial designer’s skills, the opportunities are endless. You could end up working anywhere along the product chain or use your broad range of skills to branch out into areas beyond product design.
