4-7 August - ACHSE 2009 National Congress - Building our Healthcare Systems around People and their Needs in partnership with CHAA was held on the Gold Coast, Queensland. The focus of the scientific program for this Congress fell into three sub themes:

James Barlow Seminar - Integrating healthcare services, technology & infrastructure
James Barlow is a Professor of Technology and Innovation Management and a Director of the Health & Care Infrastructure Research & Innovation Centre (HaCIRIC) and has a PhD from the London School of Economics and a background in geography and economics. James’ research focuses on the adoption of innovation in complex sectors of the economy. Planning, designing and delivering innovative infrastructure to deliver high value healthcare is a major challenge for policy makers, health services and industry - this seminar will report on work carried out by HaCIRIC to address this issue. The Centre for Health Communication, UTS hosted a seminar on the Ecology of Resilience. Frank was invited to be one of the speakers and his talk centred on ‘Rethinking the Nursing Work Environment: Patient Safety, Quality of Care and the Organizational Ecology of the Nursing Work Environment’.

 


FRIDAY 6 March - AHIA Emerging Issues Workshop No.5 - Health Planning Unit (HPU) Multi-Purpose Services (MPS), Sydney, NSW

This workshop was the fifth in a series aimed at sharing research and receiving feedback from clinicians, managers and designers regarding latest trends in clinical practice, technologies and design that should be considered in updating the Australasian Health Facility Guidelines.

CHAA & the FBE Interior Architecture Program welcome you to the first CHAA Seminar for 2009.  Our guest speaker, Visiting Professor Frank Becker, will be introduced by the Dean of FBE, Alec Tzannes. Prof Becker is from the Department of Design & Environmental Analysis/College of Human Ecology at Cornell University, New York, USA and he will be talking about new ways of working that are reshaping how we plan, design and use academic facilities.  His area of expertise is organisational ecology - studying the way in which the planning, design, and management of complex organisations such as hospitals, large corporations and R&D units affect how individuals, teams and organisations function.

TUESDAY 2 December - HCAMC EMERGING ISSUES WORKSHOP No.4 - HEALTH PLANNING UNIT (HPU): MENTAL HEALTH, ACT Health, ACT

This workshop was the fourth in a series aimed at sharing research and receiving feedback from clinicians, managers and designers regarding latest trends in clinical practice, technologies and design that should be considered in updating the Australasian Health Facility Guidelines. The objective of this forum was to alert managers and planners to the rapid pace of change in medical technology; the potential impact on facility and health service planning; and what some jurisdictions are beginning to do to deal with it.

 

MONDAY 29 September - HCAMC EMERGING ISSUES WORKSHOP No.3 - MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY FORUM, WA Health, Perth, WA

This workshop was the third in a series aimed at sharing research and receiving feedback from clinicians, managers and designers regarding latest trends in clinical practice, technologies and design that should be considered in updating the Australasian Health Facility Guidelines. The objective of this forum was to alert managers and planners to the rapid pace of change in medical technology; the potential impact on facility and health service planning; and what some jurisdictions are beginning to do to deal with it.

This workshop was the second in a series aimed at sharing research and receiving feedback from clinicians, managers and designers regarding latest trends in clinical practice, technologies and design that should be considered in updating the Australasian Health Facility Guidelines.

A range of speakers outlined current trends and information about what is currently being planned or built for a range of current projects. The attendees then divided into groups to brainstorm and develop strategies for the key issues identified that will then be considered in reviewing and updating the Inpatient Unit HPU.

The second CHAA Conference was held at the University of New South Wales in Sydney on 19 & 20 February 2007. The CHAA Conference 2007 aimed to examine current and emerging problems in the sustainability, design, financing and research of health facilities.
