Opening of Wairarapa Hospital New Zealand

The new Wairarapa Hospital at Masterton, New Zealand was officially opened by NZ Prime Minister Helen Clark on 4 May 2006, in the presence of the NZ Health Minister Pete Hodgson and other distinguished guests. Director of CHAA, Jane Carthey was a guest at the opening which was hosted by the Chair of the local District Health Board, Doug Matheson. Tribute was paid to the commitment of the local community to their health service and in particular to the vision and drive of the Chief Executive David Meates who was pleased to report to the gathering that the project was ‘on budget and on time’.

The hospital is a new 92 bed hospital, it has a six bed maternity unit with three delivery rooms, a six bed high dependency unit, six bed acute assessment unit, nine general and three paediatric clinic rooms, six recliner chairs and a 10 bed day procedure unit. Most of the rooms in the medical/surgical room are single rooms with ensuites and the paediatric unit has seven beds with room for parents to stay with their children. A single level facility, it is designed around a series of courtyards that have been creatively landscaped by the local community.

The budget for the hospital was NZ$30m and it was completed in 15 months.

The Centre for Health Assets Australasia and the Royal Australian Institute of Architects are pleased to jointly announce the publication of the Report which is accessible here. The Report is based on a survey of Australian and New Zealand health care design firms in Nov/Dec 2005. The Report is interesting reading as it quantifies the range and extent of architects’ involvement in the healthcare industry and the information sources used for their design work.

CHAA, in conjunction with FBE hosted Professor George Mann (AIA) - Professor of Health Facility Design from the College of Architecture at Texas A&M University. Prof Mann spoke at an evening function at UNSW to a very appreciative audience - view his presentation here.

Steven Tipper has an article published in the current (April 2006) edition of Hospital & Healthcare The article is titled “Designing the hospital to meet IT needs” (click here to download)

Professor Franklin Becker was recently hosted as a Visiting Professor by the Centre for Health Assets Australasia for a five week period from mid February to late March. Professor Becker is currently the Professor and Chair of the Department of Design & Environmental Analysis and Co-Director of the Design Concepts Laboratory at the College of Human Ecology at Cornell University in Ithaca New York. While in Australia, Professor Becker worked with CHAA and other researchers and students both within in both FBE and Medicine in developing a variety of research ideas and projects around understanding how clinical work environments may be better designed to support the work of healthcare staff and their interactions with healthcare consumers. He also delivered several talks and a lecture co-hosted by CHAA with the NSW Chapter of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects held at Tusculum in early March.

CHAA will welcome on 29 March another eminent overseas visitor, Sylvia Wyatt from the NHS Confederation and Manager of the NHS Future Healthcare Network, a research organization funded by local industry subscription membership. Pursuing research in similar areas to that undertaken by CHAA, the research of the FHN is directed towards improving the design and delivery processes for healthcare facilities in the UK. Ms Wyatt will be speaking to an invited audience of key industry representatives, and then participating in a round table discussion aimed at sharing UK and local experiences amongst those attending.
