WELCOME TO THE CITY FUTURES UPDATE!

Dear Colleague,

CITYFUTURES Research Centre, UNSW has recently released two new papers on Suburban Renewal:

Problems and Prospects for Suburban Renewal: An Australian Perspective
B. Randolph and R. Freestone, Research Paper No. 11, September 2008

This paper reviews  discusses the emergence of a distinctive band of older suburban areas in Australian cities and contrast this to the debate in the US on “first Suburbs”, basically urban areas built in the period just before and in the twenty years after the 2 World War.  The paper argues for a new policy focus on these areas in Australian cities.

Socially Inclusive Urban Renewal in Low Value Suburbs: A Synopsis of Issues and an Agenda for Action
B. Randolph, City Futures Research Centre Issues Paper No. 6, July 2008

What are the policy options for stimulating urban renewal in lower value and ageing suburbs of middle Sydney?  This paper outlines the problems facing these areas and canvasses some of the policy options that will be needed to ensure socially sustainable outcomes are achieved in the face of market reluctance to deliver strategic planning housing targets.

Making Urban Renewal Work
City Futures and SGS Economics and Planning co-hosted a seminar on sustainable urban renewal in Parramatta on Wednesday 1 October.
