Bruce Judd had eight years experience in private architectural practice prior to joining UNSW in 1981. Since then he has been involved in various consulting work including master planning for schools and expert witness work in NSW and Queensland. He is also an advisor to the NSW state government on social housing issues via his membership of the Department of Housing’s Living Communities Consultative Committee and the Community Regeneration Expert Advisory Committee. He has also been actively involved with a number of inner urban and outer suburban public housing communities as an advisor or in a community development capacity.
During his 25 year career in Architecture and Urban Design at UNSW has been 3rd year coordinator in the BArch program, Director of Postgraduate Studies, Head of the former Graduate School of the Built Environment and Director and Director of the Master of Urban Development and Design program. Early in his academic career he had extensive Involvement in RAIA education programs in the 1980s and was convener of a number of housing conferences, workshops and continuing education programs for the RAIA, UNSW and the Federal Government. His teaching has included:
History and Theory of Architecture (Design and Human Behaviour); Architectural Design Studio (BArch & MArch programs).
International Urban Design Studio’s in Indonesia, Korea, China, Taiwan, and Argentina; Case Studies in Urban Development and Design; Communication in Urban Design.
Supervision of a number of Masters and Doctoral theses, mostly on housing issues.
Housing design and human behaviour, housing and urban form, public housing estate regeneration, housing typology, medium-density housing.
Founding Director of the UNSW-UWS Research Centre of the Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute (AHURI) and former Deputy Director of the City Futures Research Centre. Since his retirement from the University he has been a Visiting Senior Research Fellow at City Futures.
Joint Chief Investigator on four ARC Linkage Grants on social exclusion and community renewal in New South Wales; evaluating public housing estate renewal; sustainable urban renewal in the middle suburbs; and high density living. Team leader on three AHURI research grants on crime reduction in public housing estates; housing options for older homeless people; and dwelling, land and neighbourhood use by older homeowners. Joint Chief investigator on two other AHURI projects on community participation in public housing estate renewal and triple bottom line sustainability of masterplanned and conventional suburban communities. Team member on various other research projects for the NSW Department of Housing.
He is an author of two books; A Bountiful Harvest, 2003 and Designed for Urban Living, 1993; two book chapters; editor of five books, and author of numerous journal articles and conference papers, most of which are on various housing themes.
