Built Environment at UNSW is focused on the design, construction and management of sustainable cities. At the centre of the student learning experience is the connection between evidence based research, teaching and learning undertaken by acclaimed academics and practitioners from the professions. Graduates of UNSW are renowned for exceptional intellectual and practical skills with significant career paths contributing globally to the advancement of the built environment professions.

Built Environment is structured around seven undergraduate programs each developing specialized skills within a coordinated framework. This encourages students to complement their chosen program with educational experience across a broad range of related disciplines.

Built Environment is acknowledged for educational programs that combine rigorous pedagogy, creativity, a global perspective and exceptional integration with leading professional practice. Students are encouraged to understand collaborative work processes involving inter-disciplinary problem solving, a developing characteristic of contemporary research and professional practices.

Built Environment aims to equip graduating students with outstanding education, skills and industry links to succeed in their chosen careers. Each degree program is globally acknowledged as a leading qualification that is highly valued by industry, underpinning the commencement of a successful career.

The City of Sydney provides the context for many student learning opportunities.  Built Environment studio projects in each program often are formed from major initiatives affecting the future of Sydney to enhance the student experience. Studying at UNSW Built Environment allows engagement with the unique urban culture of Sydney – Australia’s largest and most cosmopolitan city.

Students are also involved with colleagues in other universities through joint seminars and collaborative studio projects to broaden their experience beyond the Australian context. Highly valued student experiences include international programs of study to develop student knowledge in a global context.

In recent years, undergraduate courses have been conducted involving project work and study in China, Hong Kong, India, New Zealand, Spain and Italy. Joint design studios have been conducted with the Politecnico in Milan, IUAV in Venice, Tsinghua University in Beijing and Dongtan University in Nanjing.

At Built Environment, 2010 presents new initiatives to further our commitment to education and research at the highest level of achievement. We welcome you and look forward to sharing the many stimulating conversations, studio experiences and course discussions in the year ahead.
